Whenever someone tells me they're bored with their living room, the first thing they usually say is, "I think I need a new sofa." Nine times out of ten, I tell them to keep their wallet in their purse. Because chances are, you don't need new furniture. You just need to see the furniture you already own a little differently.
So grab a cup of coffee, put on some music, and give me thirty minutes. Let's see what we can do.
First, stop looking at your room as "finished."
When you walk into your living room every day, your brain stops noticing it. It just accepts that the sofa goes there, the chair goes over there, and that lamp has apparently lived in that corner since 2018. Today we're pretending we just moved in. Look around the room and ask yourself, "If I had to place every piece today, would I put it in the same spot?" If the answer is no... Perfect. Let's move something.

Start with the biggest piece.
Usually that's your sofa. Now don't panic—I don't mean drag it across the house. Just pull it away from the wall. Seriously. Even six or eight inches can make a room feel more intentional. Most people think furniture has to hug the walls to make a room feel bigger, but the opposite is often true. Try it. Stand back. Doesn't it already feel a little different?
Now look at your chairs.
Do they actually invite conversation? Or does everyone have to lean sideways and yell across the coffee table? I always tell clients that if your furniture makes it awkward to chat, the room isn't working for you. Turn a chair. Angle another one. You'd be amazed what fifteen degrees can do.
Now let's "shop" your house.
Before you buy a new side table, take a walk. Seriously. Go raid another room. That little table

in the guest bedroom? Bring it in. The basket from the office? Try it beside the sofa. That plant hiding in the dining room? It deserves a new address.
One of my favourite decorating tricks is simply moving things from one room to another. It's free, and somehow everything feels new again.
Here's one thing almost everyone has too much of...
Stuff. Take one thing off every surface. Then take one more. I know...it feels a little empty at first. But here's what happens: the things you really love suddenly stand out instead of getting lost in the clutter. Sometimes decorating isn't about adding. It's about editing.
Before you call it done...
Leave the room. Go make another coffee. Fold a load of laundry. Then come back in.
You'll see your living room with fresh eyes, and I guarantee you'll notice things you missed while you were moving everything around. You might tweak a chair. Move a lamp. Shift the coffee table six inches. Those little adjustments are what make a room feel right.
One last thing...
The best rooms aren't the ones with the most expensive furniture. They're the ones that feel comfortable, personal, and lived in. And sometimes, that's only thirty minutes away.
