SHOP YOUR HOME
Before you buy something new, look again.
You know that feeling when you're tired of a room, but you can't quite figure out what's wrong?
So you start thinking about a new rug. New pillows. Maybe a different coffee table.
But sometimes the room doesn't need more.
Sometimes you just need to see what you already have differently.

The Shop Your Home Guide • $9 CAD

What if you shopped your home first?
When I walk into a room as a designer, I'm not immediately thinking about what you should buy.
I'm looking at what's already there. What's working. What isn't.
What you've stopped noticing, and what might work completely differently somewhere else.
That's what it means to Shop Your Home.

Try this before you buy anything.
Choose one room and stand in the doorway.
Don't move anything yet.
Ask yourself: What does my eye notice first?
Then: Is that what I want it to notice?
Now take a photo.
You'll often see things in a photograph that you've stopped noticing in real life. A crowded corner, something out of balance, too many little things competing for attention, or something beautiful that's completely disappearing.
Sometimes changing a room starts with simply seeing it again.

Shop Your Own House
Now go shopping. Just don't leave the house.
Walk through your other rooms and look at what you already own.
-
A lamp you've stopped noticing.
-
Artwork that's been in the same place for years.
-
A chair in the spare room.
-
Books.
-
A little table.
-
A throw tucked away in a cupboard.
Don't look for anything specific. Look for possibilities.
Move something. Try it. If it doesn't work, put it back.
There are no decorating police coming!

I'm not going to tell you to stop buying things.
I'm an interior designer.
I like beautiful things too.
But buying something new shouldn't automatically be the first answer every time a room isn't working.
First, figure out what's actually bothering you.
Look at what you already own.
Try something different.
Then, if the room really does need something new, you'll know much more about what you're looking for.
